  7. TELEPHONE HOTLINES.  The SBA and several other government agencies
  8. maintain toll-free telephone "hotline" information services to assist
  9. businesses and taxpayers.  Some of the more important ones to know
  10. about are the following:

  12.     . SBA Answer Desk: 1-800/827-5722

  14.       This is the toll-free number of a new small business information
  15.       and referral service offered by the SBA, which you can call from
  16.       anywhere in the continental United States, except Washington,
  17.       D.C.  In the District of Columbia, call 653-7561.
  18.  
  19.       This telephone Answer Desk is staffed from 8:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
  20.       Eastern time by experts from the SBA's Office of Advocacy, who
  21.       will handle your questions regarding problems connected with your
  22.       firm and the government.  (The persons on this Answer Desk have
  23.       advised the author of this program that they have on hand a com-
  24.       plete set of the STARTING & OPERATING A BUSINESS IN ...(STATE)...
  25.       series of books (also by this author) for all 50 states and D.C.,
  26.       which they use as a reference for fielding incoming questions.)

  30.       This toll-free line is a specialized free service offered by the
  31.       Export-Import Bank to small exporters needing general information
  32.       or problem-solving assistance relating to doing business abroad.
  33.       It provides information on export credit and on assistance avail-
  34.       able from other government agencies and the private sector.

  39.       U.S. government agencies.)  Or, for information on doing
  40.       business in the "unified" European Market after 1992, call

  46.       NOTE:  For information on taxes and other aspects of doing
  47.       business in various foreign countries, the accounting
  48.       firm of Ernst & Young publishes a series of booklets for
  49.       each of a large number of countries.  To obtain one
  50.       of these country guides, call or write the Ernst & Young
  51.       office near you.  (Ernst & Young offices are located in
  52.       most major cities and in almost every state.)

  58.       Like certain Scandinavian countries, the Environmental Protection
  59.       Agency now has a "Small Business Ombudsman" to give easier access
  60.       to the EPA, help you comply with EPA regulations, and make sure
  61.       you are fairly treated in any disputes with the EPA.

  65.       Use this number (1-800/829-3676) to obtain IRS tax forms, publi-
  66.       cations, etc.  The IRS also puts on free small business workshops

  79.       Security Administration (SSA) has of your earnings and
  80.       your projected benefits at retirement age, you can file
  81.       a simple form requesting a detailed printout of this
  82.       information (and hopefully find they haven't lost your
  83.       files).  This is something everyone should do once every
  84.       few years, since, if the SSA has made a serious mistake in
  85.       your earnings record, you have only a limited number of
  86.       years in which you can contact them and have your record
  87.       corrected.
